Our Testing Techniques

The testing techniques used in our office are approved by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine and the Pan-American Allergy Society and are performed as taught by these organizations. Some of the laboratory testing used may be unfamiliar to the mainstream of today’s Western medicine-trained physicians, but is performed at laboratories certified by the College of American Pathologists. As we seek to find the cause of illness, “functional” evaluation of the body’s many systems is critical. This information is often not available by the commonly performed “static” testing. Be assured that the testing performed and/or ordered by our office is requested with patient safety and optimal health status as priorities.

Controversy

The American Academy of Allergy and Immunology and The American College of Allergy and Immunology embrace only the older and more narrowly defined testing techniques, which have been taught for the past 50 years. With these techniques, only a limited number of allergy related problems could be treated. Partly because the members of The American Academy of Allergy and Immunology and The American College of Allergy and Immunology are not familiar with the newer techniques and of their value, both of these organizations actively speak out against the newer techniques. Their negative statements are without substantiation and in spite of a growing volume of evidence in the medical literature of their efficacy.

State-of-the-Art Medicine

The Institute for Functional Medicine has been quite influential in the last few years upon physicians who are interested in practicing state of the art medicine. Many of the laboratory tests used to evaluate patients are recognized by this organization as proper and useful. They are considered to be “functional” tests used to detect dysfunction in a pre-disease state rather than the traditional “static” tests used to define established disease. They allow us to be both proactive in disease recognition and more effective in treatment of illness.
